Tailoring interfaces in polymer-based nanocomposites via nanofiller surface treatment: An insight from molecular dynamics simulations

School
NANO SCIENCES

Considering the significant role of interfacial characteristics on the mechanical properties of polymer matrix nanocomposites (PMNCs), the main challenge is how to strengthen the interface region. In this talk, I will present two case studies where MD simulation enables us to explore the role of nanofiller surface treatment on the overall mechanical behavior of PMNCs. In the first case study on the polylactic acid (PLA)/graphene systems, I am going to show how the presence of PLA grafted chains and small functional groups such as -OH, -COOH, -NH2, and -CH3 molecules can significantly improve the interfacial interactions and consequently, shea ...

A Case Study of COVID Mass Gain Phenomenon: W Bosons

School
PARTICLES AND ACCELERATORS

Abstract:

Electroweak precision tests allow us to look for new models beyond the Standard Model. I will review how electroweak precision fits are carried out and how the new CDF II measurement of W mass affects the fit. I will also discuss the contribution of some simplified extensions of Standard Model to oblique parameters S and T that can explain the observed anomaly.

Prefrontal control of visual cortical signals

School
COGNITIVE SCIENCES

Abstract:

Visual attention is an integral part of our daily life. A network of cortical and subcortical structures are involved in control of visual attention. To date, how these areas interact with each other and the chain of events giving rise to visual attention are still unclear. I will present our findings regarding the neurons and neuromodulators involved in control of visual cortical signals and discuss how these findings help us untangle the neural circuitry of attention. ...
