Neural Mechanisms for Hippocampal Sharp-Wave Ripples and Place Cell Responses

School
COGNITIVE SCIENCES

Abstract:

The hippocampus plays a critical role in spatial learning and memory. Neurons in hippocampal output area CA1 are thought to exhibit redundancy across cortical and hippocampal inputs. In this talk, I show instead that acute silencing of CA3 axon terminals drastically reduces place field responses for many CA1 neurons and disrupts the content of sharp-wave ripple-based CA1 ensemble activity. These results imply that CA3 is the predominant driver of CA1 place cells under normal conditions.

Abstract
The 'Dark Matter' (DM) is one of the mysterious components of our universe that accounts for almost 27% of its matter-energy content. Out of all the proposed dark matter candidates, 'WIMP' was thought to be the best-fitted one, yet its undetectability proved otherwise despite a decade of search. Rece ...

Hodge Conjecture

School
MATHEMATICS

Hodge conjecture is one of the major conjectures in complex algebraic geometry which is still unsolved. In this talk I will tell my own experience with this conjecture, why it is hard even in very special cases and what are the implications of this conjecture. The talk is mainly based on my book: A Course in Hodge Theory: With Emphasis on Multiple Integrals, Somerville, MA: International Press Boston, 2021.
