PARTICLES AND ACCELERATORS

Abstract: Solitons as the possible field configurations of QCD vacuum are considered as candidates for the confinement and even chiral symmetry breaking. These configurations are the finite energy solutions of equation of motion in various dimensions. Many numerical and analytical models have used different types of solitons to describe the confinement. In this talk, the solitons are introduced briefly and then some successful models based on calorons, dyons, vortices and magnetic monopoles are discussed.

ASTRONOMY

Stellar population studies provide unique clues to constrain galaxy formation models. So far, detailed stellar population studies, based on the absorption line strengths have been concentrated mainly in the optical spectral range. However, full knowledge of the stellar content of galaxies cannot be achieved by ignoring spectral regions other than optical. Until now, technical obstacles such as poor detector technology and spectral resolution has hampered astronomers to extend their studies beyond the optical domain. These are no longer limitations with current advances in the near-infrared (NIR) instruments. During my PhD, we extended the ste ...

2D-based nano/microrobots: Towards Biomedical and Environmental Applications

NANO SCIENCES

Nano/microrobots with autonomous motion are the frontier of nanotechnology and nanomaterial research. These self-propelled nano/microrobots convert chemical energy obtained from their surroundings to propulsion. Particularly, the recent progress in targeted drug delivery and efficient water purification systems is very promising. Graphene and the recently discovered layered materials -beyond graphene- have superior properties and have made a great impact on the new generation of energy, biomedical and environmental applications. Integration of single/few layers materials with extremely high surface area into nano/microrobots has been created ...

MATHEMATICS

In 1956 W. Rudin proved that the Continuum Hypothesis (CH) implies that the v Cech--Stone remainder of $ N$ (with the discrete topology), $eta Nsetminus N$, has $2^{2^{aleph_0}$ homeomorphisms. In 1979, Shelah described a forcing extension of the universe in which every autohomeomorphism of $eta Nsetminus N$ is the restriction of a continuous map of $eta N$ into itself. Since there are only $2^{aleph_0}$ such maps, the conclusion contradicts Rudin's. Rudin's result is, by today's standards, trivial: By the Stone Duality, autohomeomorphisms of $eta Nsetminus N$ correspond to automorphisms of the Boolean algebra $P( N)/$Fin. This algebra ...
