The first evidence for off-shell Higgs boson production and the measurement of its width at CMS

School
PARTICLES AND ACCELERATORS

Abstract: Offshell production provides a unique way to measure the Higgs boson width and test unitarity in diboson production amplitudes. This process also adds sensitivity when constraining the Higgs boson anomalous couplings. In this talk, studies of off-shell Higgs boson production in the ZZ to 2l2nu final state are presented, using Run 2 data from the CMS experiment. Results from the ZZ to 2l2nu final state are combined with published ZZ to 4l results to derive strong constraints.

Abstract:
A photon with a well-defined quantum state can be generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). Therefore, the beginning of the seminar is a brief review of the nonlinear optics with emphasis on the SPDC. Then some of recent works done in my group, related to the topic, will be presented. The optical mode will be explained and then results of very recent projects related to this area of research will be presented.

COGNITIVE SCIENCES

Description :

Spontaneous activity accounts for most of what the brain does and is likely to be key for information processing in the brain, but its function is still quite mysterious. Two key spontaneous activity processes are the Default Mode Network (DMN), a set of areas that are most markedly connected and active during behavioural idleness, and memory replay, the spontaneous reactivation of neural patterns occurring during experience. In the Mohajerani lab, we test the hypothesis that the DMN plays a key role in memory replay processes. This theory, if confirmed, would bring important conceptual advances: to memor ...

On Progress in Scientific Theories

Abstract
Thomas Kuhn's "theory of scientific revolutions" describes evolution in sciences from a socio-historic viewpoint, wherein paradigm shift happens as a result of a scientific revolution. According to this theory paradigm shifts are not oriented, there is no progress in scientific paradigms. In this seminar, I critically review Thomas Kuhn's theory and introduce the notion of "hyper-theory" instead of paradigm. We then discuss that not only there are meaningful ratings for scientific models, but there is also a notion of progress in theories and hyper-theories. I present and state "model of progression scientific theories" instea ...
