11:00 - 12:00 Computational Nanoscience journal club Breakdown of Optical Phonons' Splitting in Two-Dimensional Materials School NANO SCIENCES Breakdown of Optical Phonons' Splitting in Two-Dimensional Materials Abstract: We investigate the long-wavelength dispersion of longitudinal and transverse optical phonon modes in polar two-dimensional materials, multilayers, and their heterostructures. Using analytical models and density-functional perturbation theory in a two-dimensional framework, we show that at variance with the three-dimensional case these modes are degenerate at the zone center but the macroscopic electric field associated with the longitudinal-optical modes gives rise to a finite slope at the zone center in their corresponding phono ... 14:00 - 15:00 Weekly Seminar Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Group Demonstration of quantum supremacy using quantum optics School PHYSICS Organized by: School of Nano Science Venue: Seminar Room (classroom A), Farmanieh Building, IPM 14:00 - 15:00 Weekly Seminar Demonstration of quantum supremacy using quantum optics School NANO SCIENCES Demonstration of quantum supremacy using quantum optics Abstract: It is believed that quantum computers can perform certain computational tasks much faster than classical computers. A universal quantum computer, however, is still not available, so there is great interest in intermediate models of quantum computation that can perform a task beyond the power of any classical supercomputer, a landmark known as "quantum supremacy", with much simpler physical systems and algorithms. In this talk, I will discuss recently proposed quantum-optical protocols for demonstration of quantum supremacy. Specificall ... 15:00 - 16:30 Lecture Rankin-Selberg Integrals and Doubling School MATHEMATICS I will give an introduction to the so-called Rankin-Selberg method of constructing automorphic L-functions, mostly through examples. I will then report on joint work with J. Cogdell and F. Shahidi, developing a Rankin-Selberg integral for the product of general spin and general linear groups. This generalizes some results of S. Gelbart, D. Ginzburg, I. Piatetski-Shapiro, S. Rallis and D. Soudry and closely related to recent results of E. Kaplan, J.-F. Lau and B. Liu. ... 15:00 - 16:00 Weekly Seminar Studies for AWAKE Project at CERN School PARTICLES AND ACCELERATORS Abstract: The AWAKE (Advanced proton-driven plasma WAKefield Experiment) facility at CERN is a proof-of-principle experiment of plasma wakefield acceleration using a proton bunch as a driver. It was demonstrated experimentally for the first time worldwide the proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration of externally injected low energy (20 MeV) electron beam up to 2 GeV. The high acceleration gradient in plasma accelerators will allow the construction of a new generation of shorter high energy electron accelerators. Here, computer simulation plays a crucial role in understanding physics and optimizing experiments parameters. In this talk, a r ... |
