Abstract:
The condensation of meters of DNA into the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell requires dense packing of the DNA into a structure called chromatin. This genomic organization and packaging play a crucial role in regulating DNA accessibility and gene expression. Chromatin is constantly under mechanical stresses due to DNA-based chemistries, including transcription, replication, repair, and recombination. Knowledge of the chromatin structure can help to understand these mechanisms. Chromatin is composed of subunits called nucleosomes.
