What proteins do is largely determined by their sequence (and conditions under which they fold). The ability to predict whether a change in sequence will affect their function is extremely valuable: There is a clear engineering/clinical incentive to modify protein function. Over the past few years generative models have been used on sequence alignments to predict protein structure and function.
