Therapeutic resistance is among the main cause of eventual disease relapse and mortality in cancer patients. During the course of the disease, genetic alterations accumulate following Darwinian evolution. Selective pressure can spur tumor evolution and facilitate the rise of fitter clones. Therapeutic failure is often associated with the natural selection of pre-existing resistant clones, a mechanism shared by blood and solid tumors.
