Color-spread figure is one instance which could indicate the ability of visual system to complete fragmented surfaces. It has been reported that adaptation to these figures produce negative afterimages (Shimojo et al. 2001). Conducting two experiments, we examined the effect of voluntary attention on the perception of these afterimages.
The results showed that attention during adaptation weakens the afterimage of color-spread figure. Ruling out the possibility that this weakening effect is due to faster perceptual fading of attended stimuli (Lou, 1999), we have argued that attention might prevent figure ground segmentation to interpret configuration as a color-spread figure.
