First talk:
Non-zero Degree Maps between 3-Manifolds(May 9)

ABSTRACT: The title could be also understood as "3-manifolds related by non-zero degree maps" or "Degrees of maps between 3-manifolds". We will survey the topic indicated by the title, as well as some analogues in geometric group theory and in higher dimensional manifolds. The methods used are varied, and we try to describe them briefly.

Second talk:
A Quadratic Bound on the Number of Boundary Slopes of Essential Surfaces with Bounded Genus ( May 13)

ABSTRACT: Let $M$ be an orientable 3-manifold with a single boundary torus. We show that the number of boundary slopes of essential surfaces with genus at most $g$ is bounded by a quadratic function of $g$.
