Abstract

In 1950, the great French mathematician Henri Cartan, who passed away last summer at the age of 104, published two papers: « Notions d'algèbre différentielle » and « La transgression dans un groupe de Lie » where he considered and studied equivariant cohomology of a G-space. Equivariant cohomology, particularly from the point of view of differential forms, plays a role in several topics: localization formulas, index theory, and character theory for Lie groups. In this lecture, we will review some of these aspect, and describe our recent work (with S. Sahi) giving a new approach of the subject in the context of tensor categories.
