PARTICLES AND ACCELERATORS

Abstract:

Spectroscopy and spectral analysis are widely used today for studying various objects using both optical and acoustic waves. All objects have natural frequencies based on their composition and structure, including black holes, which exhibit quasi-normal modes (QNMs) that can be detected through gravitational waves in binary black hole (BBH) mergers. Einstein's theory predicts how black holes vibrate and what QNM frequencies are allowed. Observing more than one ringdown mode (QNM) can test a fundamental prediction of Einstein's theory. I am a member of an international team engaged in black hole spectroscopy, and our m ...

Partitions into Pairs with Prescribed Differences

School
MATHEMATICS

Consider the following two general questions‎:
-For an Abelian group $A$ of order $2n$ and nonzero elements $d_1‎, ‎ldots‎, ‎d_n$ of $A$‎, ‎is it always possible to partition $A$ into pairs such that the difference between the two elements of the $i$th pair is equal to $d_i$?‎
-For an Abelian group $A$ of order $2n+1$ and nonzero elements $d_1‎, ‎ldots‎, ‎d_n$ of $A$‎, ‎is it always possible to partition $Asetminus{0}$ into pairs such that the difference between the two elements of the $i$th pair is equal to $d_i$?‎
‎In this ta ...

Weak Arithmetic and Galois Theory

School
MATHEMATICS

In this lecture, we shall talk about Arithmetic from a Logical point view and introduce a related scheme of first-order axioms in the language of Arithmetic, called Open Induction (OI) and show how the problem of characterising the logical hierarchy of subsystems of OI, naturally leads to Galois Theory.
